MEET DOM

Dom is from Belgium and before settling in Verbier was in the Belgian army (where he was a platoon commander).

But despite rising through the ranks and qualifying in Social and Military Science in the forces, he decided that there was something missing and he had to get back to the mountains. Then, after qualifying on a Peak Leaders training course, he decided to make the move permanent.

Dom is a relaxed and patient instructor, and gets great reviews for adapting his teaching to suit his clients.

Plus, if you ever had any questions about heavy artillery, your coffee stops will be fascinating…

SOME LOCAL KNOWLEDGE:

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MOUNTAIN RESTAURANT?

“Dahu is my favourite restaurant on the mountain. The food is great and it’s so easy to get to – even for people that don’t ski and just want to meet up for lunch with family skiing on the mountain.

But if you are just looking for a quick snack and a drink, then my favourite place to go is Ice Cube. Again it’s easy to reach (next to the Ruinette lift station) and the music is always good whilst the view across Verbier is simply amazing.”

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SKI AREA?

“Must be the FIS black slope. It’s a good alternative from the busy M25 and isn’t much steeper – perfect for making some nice high speed turns.

At the end of the day I love to do this slope from the top of Funispace all the way to the Mayntzet restaurant, then head home towards Medran. Really satisfying after a good day of skiing.”

WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE FOR APRES?

“My favorite one is Ice Cube to start – there’s often there is a DJ playing as well. You just ski in, have a drink with friends then either make the final descent to Verbier of hop on the bubble.

In Verbier itself my favorite place is Pub Mont Fort. Everyone comes together here at the end of the day and it’s got a brilliant atmosphere – full of holidaymakers, seasonaires and one or two ski instructors…”

WHAT’S YOUR BEST TIP FOR A HOLIDAY IN VERBIER?

“I’m biased but… book an instructor. To really help you explore all of the 4 Valleys it makes a massive difference to ski with a local – there is so much more than just the Verbier area to enjoy”
